In correlation with a child’s maturity, it is always important to be honest with children regarding death. Child grief and bereavement needs to be addressed and treated honestly.
Children on many occasions are treated like they have no feelings or should be left out of the loop. While different children react differently and each child should be treated as unique, it has been shown that more damage can be done when discussing death–especially with lies or imagery the child does not understand. Child and grief bereavement is an entire science dedicated to helping parents understand the nature and psychology of a child and how he or she grieves.
