Proper breathing is essential for good lifting

Health Coaching and Lifting

When we have to lift something heavy, we tend to hold our breath. It’s not something that we decide to do. It’s pretty much automatic. The fact that it occurs entirely unconsciously makes you think there must be a good reason for it.

And there is. Our body is so clever. When we hold our breath whilst lifting something heavy we do it in a special way that’s different to holding our breath to swim underwater. Instead of just filling our lungs to the brim and not exhaling, when we lift something heavy we are forcefully trying to exhale but vigorously blocking ourselves from breathing out. The technical term for this behaviour is the Valsalva Manoeuvre, which is defined as exhaling against a closed glottis.
