“We usually think of stress as a bad thing, but it doesn’t have to be. Stress is no joke. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, 56% of surveyed employees say that stress makes their workplace performance suffer. And there are a ton of reasons — legitimate ones — to stress out during the average workday.
I’m no stranger to workplace stress. When I co-founded my company, I was hit by waves of stress, unlike anything I’d experienced before. (Who knew that starting a digital advertising agency would be so demanding?) Some days, I felt like I was barely making it through, leaving me feeling burned out and unmotivated.
Desperate for change, I started researching stress management for the workplace. I was expecting generic advice like “identify your stressors,” “talk to your supervisor,” or “listen to calming music.” I did find a lot of advice like that, but I also found some things that I didn’t expect, like a TED Talk, “How to Make Stress Your Friend,” by Stanford University psychologist Kelly McGonigal. It’s well worth a watch if you haven’t seen it. The basic idea she presents goes against everything I knew about stress. Basically, what if we reimagined stress as something that could help us?”
