COURSE INFORMATION

This comprehensive CE course provides an in depth look at the new health care law.  It is designed to give case managers a greater awareness of their role during a time when health care in America is changing. Students of this course will be able to verbalize changes to Medicare, Medicaid and the private insurance market as it relates to the government’s initiatives to provide health care to nearly every American.

Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to interpret the new health care law and state the time lines for implementing these changes. Students are encouraged to continue their learning beyond this course by visiting the federal government’s web site and the web site of their individual state.  Students are encouraged to monitor the status of the law as it is implemented over the next few years.  Upon successful completion of this course, students are awarded 25 contact hours of continuing education credits. This course is particularly designed for those who are seeking continue education units (CEs) for case management recertification.

TIME FRAME:You are allotted two years from the date of enrollment, to complete this course. There are no set time-frames, other than the two year allotted time. If you do not complete the course within the two-year time-frame, you will be removed from the course and an "incomplete" will be recorded for you in our records. Also, if you would like to complete the course after this two-year expiration time, you would need to register and pay the course tuition fee again.

GRADING: You must achieve a passing score of at least 70% to complete this course and receive the 25 hours of awarded continuing education credit. There are no letter grades assigned. You will receive notice of your total % score. Those who score below the minimum of 70% will be contacted by the American Academy of Case Management and options for completing additional course work to achieve a passing score, will be presented.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Describe the government’s visions of health care for all citizens dating back to the early 20th century.
  2. Analyze the actions of the current government which lead to the passage of the new health care law.
  3. Articulate the timelines for implementing the major provisions of the health care law.
  4. Describe changes to Medicare Part D benefit.
  5. Relate payment changes to Medicare Advantage Health Plans.
  6. Discuss the expansion of Medicaid Benefits.
  7. Identify several key incentives in the health care law which emphasizes and promote quality of care.
  8. List several preventive care services and health screenings plans will be required to cover.
  9. Define an American Health Benefit Exchange and the rules of the “exchange.”
  10.  Define “subsidies” as it relates to the new health care law.
  11. Explain “premium credits” and their usage.
  12.  Compare the four different tiers of coverage available through the exchange.
  13. Identify what “the individual mandate” is and who is exempted from the mandate.
  14. Discuss changes to COBRA under the new health care law.
  15. Evaluate your role as case manger or health care provider in facilitating care along the continuum.
