Course Information

Based on the latest research on the value of group therapy and complicated grief, this advanced CE course explains, analyzes and evaluates two practical models for treating complicated grief in group settings. The course provides a detailed review of the research on complicated grief, including risk factors and prevalence, and describes the dynamics of group support as effective therapy for those in complicated grief.  Practical guidance is given in assessment of complicated grief and forming effective groups for this population. The course presupposes and builds on your knowledge gained in previous courses in grief counseling.  This course is designed to provide 35 contact hours of education. Course Code: GC 677. Contact hours of education = 35.

Pre-requisite to course enrollment: You must be currently certified as a Grief Counselor by the American Academy of Grief Counseling to enroll into this course. This course is a required course in the curriculum for the Grief Support Practitioner Certification Program. In addition you must have also completed GC 675: Research and Clinical Practice in Grief Counseling.

GRADING: You must achieve a passing score of at least 70% to complete this course and receive the 35 hours of awarded continuing education credit. There are no letter grades assigned. You will receive notice of your total % score. Those who score below the minimum of 70% will be contacted by the and options for completing additional course work to achieve a passing score, will be presented.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

1. Define and evaluate the benefits of group therapy in treating complicated grief.

2. Distinguish the differences in objectives between supportive group therapy and interpretive group therapy.

3. Determine which approach to group therapy is best for a particular client.                                                                                            

4. Review the various therapies used in alleviating complicated grief.

5. Describe and evaluate the trial programs that support short term group therapy for complicated grief.

6. Compare and contrast the effectiveness of individual and group therapy approaches.

7. Explore the effectiveness of other group model treatments for complicated grief with group models.

8. Evaluate the effectiveness of peer counseling, psycho-dynamic, cognitive-behavior, exposure psychoanalytic therapies.

9. Review and assess the literature on the efficacy of bereavement interventions.

10. Relate the prevalence of complicated grief in various segments of the populations, i.e., the elderly, disaster victims, suicide survivors.
